Firstly, allow me to describe my vehicle. It's a 1998 Ram V10 2500 4X4 with the automatic (48RE), and the 3:56 rear end gears. 125K miles. Fresh plugs,
wires, air filter, oil and filter, and 3/8th of a tank of 88 octane fuel. It's BONE STOCK. Today I went to a local diesel performance shop and got a HP and
torque baseline. The ambient air temperture was 40 degrees Farenheit. The elevation was at 6000 feet. The power loss for elevation is approximately 2% for
every 1000 feet above sea level, and conversly, a 2% gain for every 1000 feet below sea level. Also, figure a 20% to 35% loss for the driveline (no idea what
it was for mine, but I'm leaning closer to 35%). The numbers I show are non-corrected figures at the rear wheels. The dyno was a Mustang brand dyno.
Here they are: Maximum horsepower (at the wheels) at 3750 RPM is 222.5 HP. Maximum torque at 2750 RPM is 346.9 ft/lbs.
Clearly, this vehicle has been well cared for with respect to the miles. I am not the first owner, but the second.
Keeping variation to a minimum, I will be using the same dyno once I have done some modifications. I will combine a dual exhaust system (Dynomax with a balance or X pipe) and with any luck, an SCT custom tune, and a free flow air filter for what that's worth. I think that's all I'll do. Maybe, just maybe, I may try the higher ratio roller rockers some day in the distant future.
