Hello.. I have a question regarding my 01 Ram 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 w/v10.. First, fuel mileage is terrible 5-7 city and 7-9 highway, secondly it seems to have no
power. Truck has 113k on it, I've changed plugs and plug wires, all plugs looked great, changed air filter with oem replacement and no difference. The
truck runs worse than the 360 1/2 ton I used to have. I pull a 7200lb fifth wheel and the truck struggles with it on flat land in a 10mph wind and drops to 2nd
gear on any type of incline.. The 360 I had before seemed to actually pull better. I know the v10 is a strong motor, but I cannot figure why mine is performing
so bad. Any help ? Also.. I am running 3:90 gears and auto tranny..

I would replace the oxygen sensors as by now they are toast,and i imagine the catalytic convertors are plugged up.I just did this on mine and it made a big
difference.my truck had 144k when i got it back in october.previous owner didn't take care of it so now i am fixing everything.

I've cut off the converters and replaced muffler with new oem... Checked the o2 sensors out and they're fine also...

i should add this information.. if this vehicle was originally purchased new in California, could there be some emissions components installed that are causing
me these problems ?? The truck has dual exhaust from the motor, then after the muffler it is single outlet.. There's also a smog pump or something that has
a hose connected to my exhaust pipe, is this on all v10's.. Thanks again if anyone can help me out.. I know I'm not going to get GREAT mileage, but 5-7
is bad and the power is just not there to justify 5-7mpg..

if it's really running like you say, then there is some serious engine problems. Maybe a blown head gasket or a bad cylinder or two, just doesn't sound
right to me.

Has this truck been operated with the crossfiring #5 and #7 wires? Make sure they are seperate from each other!! For your sake, I hope it's not too late.
Perform a leak down test to see if there is anything going on with those two cylinders and then check the rest. Also, check for trouble codes and the fuel
injectors for cleanliness if your leak down test is good. Comparatively speaking, I manage 10 MPG combination highway and city on the inclines found in Utah.

I checked the plug wires when I replaced them and the plugs and they are routed right. There is no misfiring or antifreeze in the oil or any smoke from the
tail pipe or anything weird... Can a leaky intake gasket cause this ? Or what about emissions stuff ?

If you suspect a leaking intake gasaket, spray some carb cleaner near the mating surfaces with the engine running. If your idle goes up, there is a vacuum leak
in that area. The pipes going to your cats is an air line from the air pump. That air aids in replenishing O2 to reduce unburned fuel into H2O and CO2, after
the front of the cat removes the O2 to control oxides of nitrogen (NOx). The air pump doesn't slow down the engine that much, so I doubt it's your
problem, but to be safe, spin it with the serpentine belt off and look for a siezed or very tight spinning pump. Do you have any trouble codes stored? You may
or may not have a check engine lamp on with some trouble codes.

Hi all
sorry for my terrible english, but im from Denmark!!! i have remade my exhaust, because my cats were ratterling! i have cut the crap off and put in a muffler thats connects the two pips into one 3" pipe, this pipe goes all the way back to the rear end of the car! it drives great! when i did that it also means that the two airlines were disconnected and is now just blowing air out... it is possible to disconnect the airpump or does it have other jobs? To answer your question, yes you can do so, but I don't know about the laws in Denmark regarding tampering with emission controls on vehicles. Here in the USA, if a vehicle doesn't pass emissions for the particular county that vehicle is registered in, and an inspection reveals tampering, a sizeable fine can be given to the owner, and registration can be revoked. |

Okay, but it's completely up to you. I would suggest a serpentine belt made for a truck without the air injection pump; that should work, but I have no
idea which years our vehicles did not have the air injection. Another option is an idler pulley to replace the injection pump, or just remove the internals
from the injection pump and use it as an idler pulley. The last idea would probrably be the least expensive way to go about it.

mine was just bipassed when i took the cats off completely .... Back to the original subject about my poor running v10 that's acting like it wants to be a
v6... One other thing I notice is when you start it, it cranks really slow like a vehicle that has a weak battery.. It did this when I bought it so I bought a
new battery with plenty of amps, it still cranks slow.. Starts right up and all, just cranks slow, could this be timing ? I know the timing is not adjustable,
but everything I am experiencing acts like an older vehicle with timing problems.. Slow crank, lost power = timing retarded... Anyone have suggestions ??

Hey Scotty, sorry for using your post!
if it is a timeing problem, it should be easy to check and proberly also cheap with a mechanic! as i always says, when i make old volkswagens, be sure that it has fuel,air og current, then it should run. But of couse these three subjects must be in the correct therms for the car! I would check the timeing og perhaps fuel pressure! any trouble codes? Jesper |

Scottyv10 sorry to hear about your truck.
I am on my way tomorrow to pick up a '01 quad with 4x4 longbox. My brother has a '98 of the same truck. I know one of the issues with the routing of the wieres are that the #5 and #7 need to be separated by the #9 wire. They were suppose to have this fixed by the 01 model. It kinda sounds like it could be a leaking intake. When your driving empty do you have a dead spot in your acceleration? Just trying to think though some things. Well I better get going to work and then pack to leave in the morning. I just noticed this was about a month ago hopfuly you have figured it out if not let us know and I will try and be of some further help. -Schrep
